Literary Evaluative paper

Last paper of the trimester, due Thursday, October 30, 2003.

Literary Evaluative paper
We are becoming sophisticated readers of literature who are dabbling into Literary Criticism and Analysis. Your last outside essay paper this trimester asks a bit more of you as a reader and thinker; you are to become judge.
In a 3-5 page essay, evaluate the literary quality of two novels, Silas Marner and Ethan Frome, or two plays, "A Doll's House" and "An Inspector Calls." In your evaluation, use the three points of consideration from the Story and Stucture text ("The Scale of Value": Pages 314-319 in the 9th edition):
Every story is to be initially judged by how fully it achieves its central purpose. (Every first-rate story is an organic whole)
•A story, if successful, may be judged by the significance of its purpose.
•When we judge the significance of the purpose of a work of fiction, we inevitably must take into account its breadth.
I encourage you to reread "The Scale of Value" several times to internalize the discussion.
Papers are due Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the beginning of class.
