Second Trimester encounters
For those of you who asked, I'm posting the
information on your responsibilities for second trimester.
AP English
2nd Trimester
Novel:
Life of Pi (Yann
Martel)
I have copies of these for everyone; they are in the
same cabinet as the other texts for class. Read and be ready to discuss the
first week back third trimester. You may want to jot down some
questions/favorite quotes/reactions to the work before you come to class. Also,
it's a pretty good idea to think/write out an Idea Machine.
Literature Review
Procedure
Read 50 pages of each Text (see below)
You choose which pages to read (though I do make
some
suggestions if you are not sure). Take a look at your task and look at the TOC
and find what answers that question and what interests you.
Write a 5-8 page Literature review
paper
"What does each author contribute to the
idea of Story?"
The "Big Question" of the paper
Advice on writing the literature
review:
Typed/Double-Spaced
Name
Class
Date
(all flush left)
Title (centered)
Begin your paper and yes, you may have an intro and
conclusion, but don't belabor the point.
Staple your paper in the top left-hand corner and
turn in on the first day of the 3rd
Trimester.
Plus "Referenced Works" page
On a separate page (the last one of your paper),
center the heading "Referenced Works" and list each text in typical
Bibliographic form. After each work, in parentheses, indicate which pages you
read. [Example: Lewis, C.S. On Stories.
Harvest Books: New York, 1982; (Pages 3-10; 20-30; 40-73). ]
Texts
We have a limited number of copies of each text, so
you may "check out" a copy for 3 days. You may also want to begin this Review
early on in the Trimester so you are not scrambling for texts.
On
Stories (Lewis)
Suggested chapter: "On Stories"
The Things They
Carried (O'Brien)
Suggested chapters: "The Things They Carried,"
"Spin," "How to Tell a True War Story"
Walking on
Water (L'Engle)
Suggested chapters: First two chapters
On
Writing (King)
Suggested reading: Begin on Page 135
Dramatica: A New Theory of
Story (Phillips &
Huntley)
This text is available online in two forms: the entire
book (950k PDF) or as a comic book (2 MB PDF). The comic book is 32 pages long
and will satisfy the reading requirement for this work (it's a bit dramatic and
text heavy, but it gives you an excellent overview of the Dramatica theory of
Story).
