Life of Pi discussion...interesting

At our annual Judson-Bickel-Certalic Thanksgiving weekend in Schaumburg, IL, the group tackled this year's book: Life of Pi. How did it go? Read on

For the past five years, we have gathered in Schaumburg, IL to celebrate Thanksgiving. Tim and Jennifer Bickel (Lori's brother and his wife) live in Milwaukee, WI and her parents, John and Janet Certalic live just south of the Brewer town. Lori's parents, Ken and Doris Bickel, live about 8 blocks from us, so Schaumburg, IL seems to be a "halfway" point for everyone.

Besides eating and shopping, we come having read the same book. Past years have included Angela's Ashes , Poisonwood Bible and Pears in a Willow Tree . This year, Lori and I got to choose the book to read and everyone had to read Life of Pi.

Here, Jennifer, Tim (reclining) and Ken (sitting) are discussing some of the questions from the back of the book. I won't give too much away regarding the discussion. Let's just say that most of the talk centered around the religious overtones of the novel (How is this a book about God? And the idea that one could be Hindu, Christian, and Islamic). Also, our readers quipped about which story was true.

I don't want to say much more about the novel as to spoil it for those who haven't read the novel yet. I can say that even though there was at least one person who didn't like it at all, our discussion was rich with serious points and some lighter moments (like the constant calling one another "Richard Parker").

I'm hoping for an enjoyable week of discussion when we come back together in 3rd Trimester.

Here's our group!
Ken and Doris Bickel; John and Janet Certalic; Evan and Colin and Lori Judson; Jennifer, Tim and nephew Nathaniel. Oh, the freakishly tall guy in back is me (before turning a prime number yesterday).

Peace and enjoy!
