Welcome Class of 2005! (Class of 2004, you will not be forgotten)

Here's a copy of the summer AP English reading and writing opportunities:

20 May 2004

Dear 2004-2005 AP English Student:

You are receiving this letter because your name appeared on the AP English class list for first trimester. If you have received this letter in error, think “origami” or “paper airplane.”

I wanted to welcome you to the class and let you know about the “things and stuff” for the summer. You'll be doing some reading and some writing:

Reading:
Middlemarch (George Eliot)
Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky)

You can find both of these books in your public library or favorite bookstore. You should have a copy to use during the first few weeks of class, so if you choose to purchase a copy, Barnes and Noble has good prices on both novels (about $6 for each) or check an online bookstore. Please avoid study guides at this point; you should get used to reading novels on your own. Both novels are longer texts and should be a challenge for you.

Writing:
One of the challenges that you will be facing during your senior is applying to college. Besides filling out various forms, you will be asked to write a personal essay; universities all have their own prompt to respond to, so if you have one or two written, you have something to build on.

To help facilitate this process and to provide some diagnostic material for class, you will write two essays. Please type your draft and write as much as you think it will take to respond to the prompt. These essays should reflect your best work. Select two from the following list of six essay prompts from various universities:
•Choose and discuss a quotation or personal motto that reflects your values and beliefs and tells us something about the kind of person you are.
•You have just finished your 300-page autobiography. Please submit page 217.
•Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and explain that influence.
•Describe a character in fiction, an historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you and explain that influence.
•Recall an occasion when you took a risk that you now know was the right thing to do.
•What is your favorite word and why?

If you have any questions, stop by Room 138 or say “Hey” to me in halls. If something comes up during the summer, my email address is cjudson@mac.com .

Have a great summer and I hope you enjoy the reading and writing.

Peace and Bonum Fortunum!
